I was nervous to fly and didn’t sleep much. There was a plane crash the week before, so I was freaked out. Luckily, our flight took off and landed safely. The only problems I had were the turbulence and the guys jabbing his elbows into me throughout the flight. We arrived to a rainy, cold Luxembourg. Being typical Erika, I left my umbrella in Spain.
Tip: If you are going to visit Luxembourg, do it when it’s sunny. And don’t go on a Sunday.
The cheapest way to get into town is by taking the bus, which costs 2 euros for a ticket. After we bought our tickets, we found out the buses are free on Sundays! Since Luxembourg is one of the smaller countries, the ride isn’t very long. Luxembourg is like a giant valley. The important buildings are on the top and then in the valley there are some cute houses and restaurants.
Luxembourg is one of the richest countries in the world per capita. That means that many things are pretty expensive. Look for small cafes to get the most out of your money. Remember, the people of Luxembourg speak French! You will see a lot of French and a little English. We also found a really cute antique and coffee shop called Kaale Kaffi. They had the perfect heart shaped creamer in the coffee.
The Sites
One of the main attractions is the Grand Ducal Palace (Palais Grand-Ducal) where the current Grand Duke of Luxembourg lives. Visitors are not allowed inside because it is still used as a residence. Rumor has it, if you knock on the door, someone will answer. Good luck to that, though! There are guards standing outside the palace ready to take you down.
Our day was dictated by the rain, but if you are lucky enough to have good weather, take a stroll around! We decided it would be a good idea to go towards the Notre Dame Cathedral since it was inside away from the rain. It was our “safe haven” from the torrential downpour. The inside is pretty, as are most cathedrals. It was dark, but peaceful.
We sucked it up and kept walking around. If we had stayed inside all day, we would have lost our one day in the city. I pulled my hair into a pony tail and kept on going. The views around the city are incredible. A lot of the building are really simple, but it gives off a certain elegance. Less can be more! There’s an elevator that takes you down into the valley. There are houses, bars, and restaurants down there. It’s very quiet and quaint, but beautiful.
There was another church at the bottom, although not quite as grand as the one up top. There’s nothing too special about the church down there, but it was an escape from the rain. I was soaked through my jacket. We then found a English type pub to warm up a little.
Luxembourg is a nice city to walk around. It looks like a really fun place to go in the summer, with so many cute areas and restaurants. It’s also super small, so it’s easy to get around. Our day ended somewhat early since we were all so cold and wet. We still had seven more days of adventure, so we didn’t want to waste all our energy on the first day.
